Assume you work for a company that produces reusable plastic bottles. The functional unit is the annual production volume of 10,000 kg of plastic bottles. The bottles are made from polypropylene and polystyrene. You can find both materials in the ecoinvent v2.2 database. As these materials are purchased, the input place is located in the frame Scope 3 – Upstream. The bottles are packed in cardboard boxes and transported by company-owned trucks.
Electricity and heat, which are used during manufacture, are partly produced at a company-owned cogeneration plant. The gas supply input is placed in Scope3 – Upstream whilst direct emissions from the incineration process contribute to Scope 1.
The employees commuting activities and business travels are related to Scope 3 – Upstream. Fuels, consumed by company-owned cars are assigned to this scope as well, their direct emissions are to be accounted for in Scope 1.
As for the use-phase of the bottles assume that no emissions are caused. Incineration is modeled for end-of-life treatment of bottles and cardboard packaging , as well as for waste originating from manufacture.
